A Pennsylvania appeals court just left intact an $815.8 million judgment against Exxon Mobil.
The plaintiff, a former service-station mechanic, said years of exposure to benzene in gasoline and solvents caused his acute myeloid leukemia.
A jury awarded him $725 million, plus $500,000 to his wife. Delay damages later pushed the total to nearly $816 million.
Exxon appealed.
The Superior Court rejected most of its arguments and let the judgment stand.
The case is a striking example of how an exposure claim from decades earlier can still support an enormous verdict when causation survives the fight.
